Prosti čas preživja v naravi in ob broškah.

Včasih sodeluje na različnih lovskih, umetniško – likovnih in komercialnih razstavah domače in umetnoste obrti.

FRANC BARBIČ

Franc Barbic was born on February 22nd, 1938 in Verje in a family of five children.

He attended four years of Primary school in Zgornje Pirniče, then 3 years in Preska and the last year of the Primary school in Šentvid, where he also finished a Secondary school. He graduated at Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Ljubljana. After the graduation he got married and went for military service.

Franc Barbič is well known as retired ZOO conservator, one of the best shooters among hunters. Only a few are familiar with his talent of carving in a horn.    The various images of deer, capricorn, capercaillie, roeback, chamois, black grouse and others are curved from the deer, fallow deer or roeback horn. These are filigree works of art made of horns.

Hundreds of buttons, brooches, pins, ties, rings, rings for scarves and pendants are decorated dresses of hunters and their homes.

Franc is 75-years old and very talkative, sparkling correspondent. He describes the periods of his life during our visit.

Franc, a master of craft, in addition to the preparation of taxidermy products of fishes, birds and mammals, has dealt with horn already sixty years. He is well known across Slovenia as his father who worked until his retirement in the National Science museum in Ljubljana.

Hunting in Barbič family has passed from generation to generation. Already the Franc’s grandfather was a hunter. He was among the founders of the Slovenian hunting society in 1907. The tradition was continued by his father, who started to officially work as a taxidermist in 1926. Franc started to work in sixty years of the last century. His father shoot the capercaillie in 1925 and took it to the taxidermist. He was amazed watching the whole procedure, so he decided to become a taxidermist. He improved his taxidermist skills in Vienna in 1931 at famous taxidermy company called Hodek.

Franc remembers his growth from a young child together with a hunting and his father´s profession. Franc wanted to study forestry, but he considered his father´s will and studied Veterinary medicine. After the graduation he worked for a few months at Biotechnical Faculty of Ljubljana, Institute for pathology of wild animals. He was veterinarian also in the army. After the military service he returned home to his family. It was just a dormouse hunting season and a lot of work in his father´s taxidermy workshop.

Franc began to work as a taxidermist in 1967 and did this work till the retirement.

The story of curving in the horn is also connected with his father. His father was inspired and learnt by Ivan Pestotnik – Johi from Jezersko. Franc was learning watching his father. In 1984 he obtained confirmation that his products are art of work. This license was confirmed also in a new country Slovenia. For this work you need a horn, a tool, an idea, and of course also the artistic hand – talent. In the conservation work and as well as curving he got a lot of the benefits from his knowledge at veterinary, in particular the knowledge of anatomy.

At the beginning of this work he used primitive tools, knifes, hand drills, but nowadays he uses also electrical machines.  You can use the whole antler parts for brooch manufacturing. The most common motifs are wild animals and plants, in particular the edelweiss. The amazing is also hunter on a rock, which is a trademark of Slovenian hunting magazine called “Lovec”.

From the young ages Franc is an early bird. He wakes up early in the morning and goes in the bad early in the evening. He spent a free time in the nature and at brooches. He gets big help from his wife and from the doctors who help him last fifteen years to overcome many of autoimmune ills that he can live and work.

Franc says in humorous tone that his wife is taking care for the home and he is taking care for his workshop.

He is also a successful shooter. There are over 170 trophies and more than 250 medals from local and national competitions which sparkle in the house. Six times he was national champion in shooting of the clay pigeon and with caliber rifle into a target. He was several  times a member of the winning teams of the hunting family Šmarna gora and Hunting Association of Ljubljana.

He loves all the designs, but sometimes he is empty, without motivation for work, because nowadays there is a little interest of this kind of products and the young hunters have entirely different values than the older ones. They do not bother if buttons on the hunting clothes are made of plastic materials. Some years ago there was more interest for those products, but at that time there was no time, because Franc was too busy as taxidermist.

In 1962 he made 200 brooches for hunting in Karadžordževo, where the leading politicians from that time were hunting. Franc occasionally participates in a wide variety of hunting or art or commercial exhibitions of domestic and art crafts.
